I started my weight loss journey in November of 2017 at 428.4 pounds, and started making changes to lose weight prior to surgery. Little did I know that in 2018, I’d be making more major life changes. In March of 2018, I kicked out my emotionally and financially abusive husband. At the time it seemed as if my whole world was falling apart, but now I realize it was the second best decision of my life. In April, I moved back home with my parents until I could become financially stable again. While all of these big changes were happening, I was still going through the process to get weight loss surgery and losing weight.
Surgery and Beyond
I joined the Loser’s Bench (a common term among the bariatric community for weight loss surgery) on June 18, 2018. I felt scared, excited, overwhelmed and happy to be making such a positive change for myself. The first few days were tough, but I had already been through so much, I knew I could handle it. On September 16, 2018 (my 31st birthday!) I ran my first 5k post-op and felt amazing. In October, I ran an obstacle 5k course as well. It was an incredible experience, and there was no way I could have done these races at my heaviest weight.
October 2018 was an exciting and stressful month for me. Not only did I run my obstacle 5k race, but I met my now boyfriend. He has been so sweet and supportive, and I am truly lucky to have met him. However, that month I also found out that I would be losing my full-time job of seven years. It meant I’d also lose health insurance and life insurance as well. It was an extremely stressful and exciting time. Luckily, I got hired at a great company in December and started a new career in January 2019.
