Most bariatric surgery programs recommend you consume at least 60 to 80 grams of protein per day. However, when your stomach is so small, it’s hard to consume so much protein, especially in the first few weeks after surgery. Most patients turn to a form of protein shakes to reach their protein goals. At more than 16 months post-op, I still drink a protein shake daily. But, not those chalky ones you buy at the store. I’ve used Bariatric Advantage High Protein Meal Replacements since my pre-op liquid diet. They provide nearly half of the minimum amount of protein I need, taste great and are convenient. I’ve developed some recipes using this high protein meal replacement and can’t wait to share them with you! The Bariatric Advantage High Protein Meal Replacement nutritional drink provides 27 grams of protein with only one gram of sugar and tastes delicious!

High Protein Meal Replacement Nutritional Facts
So why is all of this information good to know? As I said, I’ve been using Bariatric Advantage High Protein Meal Replacement nutritional drinks since my pre-op liquid diet. I didn’t have a choice in which brand to use for this purpose. However, I am really glad my bariatric surgery program required the use of Bariatric Advantage. I love that they use research and scientific data to create their products, as well as that they’re based in the U.S. Their High Protein Meal Replacement nutritional drinks not only taste great but are highly tailored to the bariatric person.
The nutritional drinks are made with whey protein isolate. According to Healthline, whey protein isolate undergoes more processing than whey protein concentrate. This additional processing means more protein with fewer carbohydrates, lactose and sugar. My nutritionist told me I should always lean towards whey protein isolate versus concentrate.
The Bariatric Advantage High Protein Meal Replacement nutritional drinks have 27 grams of protein per serving. That’s nearly half of the recommended minimum of 60 grams of protein per day. Each serving also contains the following:
- 1.5 to 2.5 grams of fat
- 150 to 160 calories
- 11 grams of carbs (6 grams from fiber and 1 gram from sugar)
- 20+ essential vitamins and minerals
- Gluten-free
Pros of Using Bariatric Advantage
The High Protein Meal Replacement nutritional drinks come in a variety of flavors. You can choose from nine different flavors. For each kind, it’s recommended that you mix two rounded scoops with eight ounces of cold water. Each bag comes with a scoop to measure. The nine flavors currently are:
- Vanilla
- Chocolate
- Strawberry
- Cookies and Cream
- Orange Cream
- Banana
- Iced Latte
- Pumpkin Spice (limited edition)
- Creme
My favorite flavors are the iced latte, banana and vanilla. I usually alternate between these three each month. It’s one of the things I love about using Bariatric Advantage. Their auto-reorder is convenient. I can just set what I want and know that it will be delivered to my door before I run out each month. Plus, you get free shipping on auto-reorders, 10 percent back in reward points and you can make changes anytime.
Their customer service is also top-notch. Anytime I have an issue or a question, I can call them or email them. Their customer service reps are friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and always take care of me. For example, a few months ago, there was an issue shipping my multivitamins. It was the first time I ever had an issue with my auto-reorder. I inquired about it, and not only were my vitamins expedited, but they also gave me 10 percent off my next order.
I mentioned earlier that you get 10 percent back in reward points. These add up pretty quickly! The last time I ordered, I got $20 off my order because of my reward points. I generally just let mine build-up until I have a good amount to use.
Cons to Using Bariatric Advantage
No product or company is perfect, and as such, there are a few things I would love to see changed with Bariatric Advantage’s High Protein Meal Replacement nutritional drinks.
First, I’ve tried nearly all of the flavors. The only ones I haven’t tried are the creme and pumpkin spice. I did like all of them, except for the orange cream. I was expecting an orange-creamsicle type taste, but what I got was way more orange and less cream. It was really hard for me to drink those nutritional drinks, and I often ended up using them in smoothies mixed with frozen fruit. It kind of masked that taste a little bit.
The other flavor I think is a bit deceiving is the cookies and cream. Again, I was expecting it to taste like an Oreo, but it’s more of an oatmeal-cream-pie flavor. It wasn’t unpleasant, just not what I was expecting. I did enjoy this flavor, but I thought it could be too sweet if I was drinking it every day.
While I love the auto-reorder feature, I do not like that I can’t edit my flavor choice online. I can edit when it ships, but if I want to switch between the three flavors I love, I have to call their customer service. It’s never a big deal to call them, and as I said their customer service is very nice. It would just be nice if I could do it online rather than wait on the phone.
My History with Bariatric Advantage
My bariatric surgery program required a 10-day liver-reducing diet. For this purpose, we had to drink four protein shakes a day. My surgeon’s office stocked Bariatric Advantage, and we had to purchase a 35-serving bag, plus five ready-to-shake bottles. At our final nutrition class, we were able to sample the different flavors, so we knew which ones to pick.
I choose vanilla for my 35-serving bag and a mix of the iced latte and banana for the ready-to-shake bottles. I choose vanilla because I could mix in a lot of different flavor-additives to change the flavor. It would have been hard to do with the chocolate or strawberry flavors.
After surgery, I still had some Bariatric Advantage leftover, so I used that at first. I thought I would try a protein powder I could find at the store, but all the ones I tried either didn’t agree with me or left a gross after-taste in my mouth.
Frustrated with my options, I went back to Bariatric Advantage’s High Protein Meal Replacement nutritional drinks. I’ve used them exclusively since then, as the other popular and not-so-popular shakes from the store made me sick.
I’m glad I’ve stuck with them since my surgery over 16 months ago, as they’ve treated me well, and it’s helped me get the protein I need every day.
