The full liquid diet phase is the second of five phases bariatric patients progress through after surgery. First, we discussed the requirements for the clear liquid diet when you focused on hydration. Now, the full liquid diet focuses on hydration and protein. Protein helps heal the stomach and provides energy. You’ll consume liquids containing milk now, like pudding and yogurt, and still aim for 48 to 64 ounces of total fluid per day. During the full liquid diet after bariatric surgery, it is important to stay hydrated and start consuming protein.

Purpose of Full Liquid Diet
The purpose of the full liquid diet is to stay hydrated and promote healing. Your new stomach is not quite ready for solid foods, and so you must continue to consume liquids to promote healing. Trying to consume solids too soon can causes blockages and severe pain. Remember that you just had a major operation on your stomach, and it takes time to heal.
If you’re worried about the right foods to buy and eat on the full liquid diet, I invite you to download my full liquid diet grocery list and menu plan. It gives you a complete list of foods to buy to help you prepare for this stage of the bariatric post-op diet.
